I’m reaching out to see if there are any budding sailors looking to log a few offshore miles. I’ve got a 44’ catamaran (Nautitech 442) and am having it delivered up the cost to Cape Cod. If all goes well, she’ll be in Hilton Head tomorrow and looking to pick up 1 or 2 more crew. There’s a paid skipper aboard and additional crew. Please reach out if interested.

The wind was perfect. We got to go out for a few practice races before a big dark cloud headed our way.
- we practiced sitting on the starting line so we all had great starts
- we practiced beating to windward using telltales to make sure are sails were trimmed properly
- we practiced steering downwind using the rudder as little as possible - heal the boat to steer, sail in or out to steer.
Interesting in Kayaking Tuesday evening 5:30 or so? Weather should be past - cooler with no wind!
Is the kayaking class at 9 a.m. still on today?

Anyone want to paddle Friday if the forecast holds up (70 and sunny)? I'd be bringing my own kayak, as I'm not yet certified to use a club boat. Hopefully this is OK (I'm new). Spent last Summer as a guide for Kayak Chicago working at Montrose beach and tours on the Chicago river. Trained in rescue and related safety. Thanks!

We talked about steering and responding to winds shifts without the rudder, and starting strategies. This was a multi-media discussion with sailing pictures from Mike West's Florida regatta a few months ago.

Thank you for your comments, albeit broad, what is your commitment of the protected launch and barge project. The Barge is crumbling and currently closed. The barge is critical to all types of boat launching because it provides access to Powerboats, larger Sailboats, PWC and protection from launching directly into heavy surf for smaller watercraft. At least 20 years old, there is no plan in place, or being publicly addresss, as agreed to by the Park District Board to repair or replace this critical component of Highland Park's only boating facility. It's great to talk about support and long term commitment to Park Ave Beach but what will YOU do to ENSURE boat launching in 2017 and beyond? Residents and Members want to know - what's your plan?

We had a great turnout for our Racing Workshop last Saturday, July 11th. Present were:
It's great to see so many new sailors interested in racing.
We did not get on the water. There was very little wind and the radar showed approaching storms. We did a lot of chalk talk on a typical Race Course, Rules around the course, and then rigged a boat to see what the little wind we had would do to the sail.
I hope some of the newer sailors join the Sunday races.

Another great racing day at Park Ave. Beach... with 5 Sunfish and 5 Buccs competing today, with the participation of our always welcome Thistle of Bill & Barbara Perley!
Jim Irwin leads the Bucc fleet, followed by Dave Mecklenburger and Axel Anderson. Mike West leads the Sunfish fleet, followed by Ronaldo Borger, Steve Knapp and Michael Homer.
What an awesome day on the waters of Lake Michigan @ Park Ave Beach today! With great SE winds we had all of our fleets represented: Sunfish, Buccaneer, Bill & Barbara's Thistle, and even a couple 420s!

NSYC 2015 Sailing Class is Full
Interested in learning to Sail, Kayak, Stand Up Paddle Board? NSYC will host an Open House with tours, boats on display, instructors available for Q&A. Stop in and join us for a brief tour! It's a great way to spend the summer.
The 2015 Michigan Open Sunfish Regatta will be held at Gull Lake, MI (near Kalamazoo) on June 6-7th. I've attended the last two and really enjoyed it. There is a modest entry fee, but membership in the USSCA is NOT required.

Looking at our High Def WebCam, it looks like the sand ramp is almost done, the Power Boat launch is almost ready too. May 2nd is Official Opening Day for the Park Ave Boat Launch! Now we just need some warm and sunny Spring days and we are ready to go! Look forward to a wonderful season at the NSYC!

In regards to the 20 million marina, the local residents voted it down as they didn't want to pay for an enormous marina with excessive traffic.
WHAT TO DO? I suggest we build up our numbers again (with sailors, motor boaters, kayakers, outdoor enthusiasts, etc.) and request that the PDHP come up with a moderately-sized marina (like we currently have) and build it on the north beach. It will take money to construct, but not $20 million. It needs to be considerate of the neighbors, not add any additional parking, and accomodate the activities we love on Lake Michigan.
Other: Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve Restricted Access: Please write to your Lake County Forest Preserve commissioner before April 28th. Tell them you don't want Plan A or B (http://www.lcfpd.org/preserves/improvement-projects/) which restrict parking and walkability, but you want Plan C (Cohen Plan) or D (As-is). Tell them you love and enjoy access to Lake Michigan and a Forest Preserve should be available to the public and not restricted so only private homeowners or nearby locals can walk to the site.
